What Is the Best Time of Year to Install Turf in South West WA?
A healthy green lawn can completely transform a new home or existing garden. However, one of the most common questions we receive is: when is the best time to install turf in the South West?
The good news is that roll-on turf can be installed during most of the year in areas such as Margaret River, Cowaramup, Witchcliffe, Busselton, Vasse and Dunsborough. However, some seasons provide easier establishment conditions than others.
In most cases, spring and early autumn are the best times to install new turf in South West WA. The temperatures are generally mild, the soil is warm enough to support root growth, and the lawn is less likely to experience the intense heat and moisture loss that can occur during summer.
Why Spring Is an Excellent Time to Install Turf
Spring is often the ideal season for installing a new lawn.
As the weather begins to warm, warm-season turf varieties become more active and establish their roots quickly. The days are generally warm enough to encourage growth without the extreme heat that can place additional stress on newly laid turf.
Installing turf in spring also gives the lawn time to establish before the hottest part of summer. By the time higher temperatures arrive, the turf should have developed a stronger root system and be better equipped to handle heat and regular use.
Spring is particularly well suited to:
Landscaping for newly completed homes
Replacing an old or damaged lawn
Installing turf before the Christmas and summer entertaining period
Completing irrigation and garden works at the same time
Spring is a popular time for landscaping, so it is worth planning if you would like your lawn established before summer.
Is Autumn a Good Time to Lay Turf?
Early autumn is another excellent time to install turf in the South West.
The soil is usually still warm after summer, which supports root development, while cooler daytime temperatures reduce stress on the lawn. There may also be less evaporation than during the middle of summer, making it easier to keep the turf and underlying soil consistently moist.
Water Corporation identifies late autumn and early spring as favourable times for laying lawn because the ground retains warmth while cooler conditions help maintain moisture.
The main consideration with a later autumn installation is that warm-season turf grows more slowly as temperatures fall. Turf can still establish, but it may take longer to fully knit into the soil and develop its best colour.
For the South West, we generally prefer to install autumn turf early enough that it has time to begin establishing before the coldest and wettest part of winter.
Can Turf Be Installed During Summer?
Yes, turf can be installed during summer, but it requires careful preparation and consistent watering.
Warm temperatures can encourage rapid root growth, but newly laid turf can also dry out very quickly. On hot or windy days, the turf and the soil underneath must not be allowed to dry out while the roots are establishing.
A properly designed and functioning irrigation system is especially important for summer turf installation. New turf generally requires several shorter watering cycles during its initial establishment period before watering is gradually reduced.
Water Corporation recommends watering newly installed turf multiple times per day at first and gradually reducing the frequency as its roots develop. Property owners may also need an approved watering exemption to water outside their normal roster while establishing a new lawn.
Summer installation can work very well when:
Reticulation is installed and tested before the turf arrives
The soil is properly prepared
The turf is laid promptly after delivery
Water reaches the entire lawn evenly
The watering schedule is monitored and adjusted for the weather
Without reliable irrigation, we would generally avoid installing a large lawn during very hot weather.
Can Turf Be Installed During Winter?
Turf can also be installed during winter, although establishment will usually be slower.
The turf may not produce much visible new growth during the colder months, particularly if it is a warm-season variety. It can take longer for the roots to anchor into the prepared soil, and the lawn may not achieve its full colour until conditions warm up again.
Southwest properties can also experience heavy winter rainfall and poorly draining ground. Installing turf over saturated or inadequately prepared soil can lead to soft areas, compaction and drainage issues.
Winter installation may still be suitable where:
The site drains well
The ground is not waterlogged
The soil can be properly prepared
The lawn does not need to tolerate heavy foot traffic immediately
The owner understands that establishment and colour may be slower
Where practical, waiting until late winter or early spring can provide a faster and more predictable result.
The Turf Variety We Generally Install
At Karri Coast Landscaping, we generally install a premium soft-leaf buffalo turf variety.
Premium buffalo is a popular option for South West homes because it provides a soft, attractive lawn while offering a practical balance of durability and maintenance. It can perform well in full sun and can generally tolerate more shade than many couch or kikuyu varieties.
Buffalo turf is often a good choice for:
Family gardens
New homes
Areas with a mixture of sun and partial shade
Lawns adjoining garden beds and landscaping
Customers wanting a softer, broad-leaf lawn
Properties seeking a relatively low-maintenance lawn option
Water Corporation describes buffalo as a drought-resistant, frost-tolerant, warm-season grass with low-to-moderate maintenance requirements and lower invasiveness than kikuyu. It recommends at least four hours of direct sunlight each day.
However, no turf variety is suitable for every property. Before recommending turf, we consider the amount of sunlight, soil conditions, drainage, expected foot traffic, irrigation coverage and the way the space will be used.
Preparation Is Just as Important as Timing
Choosing the right season helps, but the quality of the site preparation will have an even greater effect on the finished lawn.
Simply laying turf over compacted sand, poor-quality fill or an uneven surface can result in dry patches, drainage problems and inconsistent growth.
A proper turf installation may include:
Removing existing grass, weeds or unsuitable soil
Checking finished levels against paving, paths and garden edging
Improving or replacing poor soil
Applying an appropriate wetting agent and soil amendments
Levelling and lightly compacting the surface
Installing and testing reticulation
Laying the turf with tight, staggered joins
Rolling and thoroughly watering the completed lawn
Good soil-to-turf contact is essential. The turf should sit firmly against the prepared soil without hollows or raised sections underneath it.
Do You Need Reticulation Before Laying Turf?
For most new lawns, we strongly recommend having a suitable irrigation system installed and tested before the turf is laid.
New turf needs consistent moisture across the entire area. Hand watering can be unreliable, particularly for larger lawns, and it is easy to miss edges or sections that receive less coverage.
Installing reticulation first also avoids having to disturb a newly established lawn later.
Once the turf is established, irrigation should be adjusted to encourage deeper roots rather than continuing with frequent shallow watering. In Perth and the South West, Water Corporation advises that established lawns generally need around 10 millimetres of water twice per week during summer, subject to local watering rosters and the conditions of the property.
Remember to Apply for a Watering Exemption
WA watering rosters still apply when installing a new lawn.
A temporary watering exemption may allow the property owner to water more frequently while new turf is establishing. Water Corporation states that exemptions are available for new roll-on lawn and should commence on the installation date. Watering outside the roster without an approved exemption may result in a sprinkler breach.
The property owner should apply for the exemption on the day the turf is installed so they receive the full establishment period.

Also excellent: Early autumn
Possible with careful watering: Summer
Possible but slower: Winter
The exact timing will depend on your site, irrigation, drainage, construction schedule and how soon you need to use the lawn.
A well-prepared lawn installed during a less-than-perfect month will usually perform better than turf laid during the ideal season without proper soil preparation or irrigation.
